SIXTH-MAN SIGNUPS . . . The popular Sixth-Man Club, which supports Stanford basketball, will hold signups for the 1997-98 season on Saturday, from 8:30-10 a.m. at Maples Pavilion. Last year, 700 students joined the club. Following signups, the Stanford women's basketball team will hold its first practice of the season from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Maples. It's free and open to the public. The Cardinal men will conduct their initial workout from 4-6 p.m. That, too, is open to the public. The women return 11 letterwinners, including seniors Naomi Mulitauaopele, Vanessa Nygaard, Heather Owen and Olympia Scott from a team that went 34-2 and reached a third straight NCAA Final Four last season. Newcomers to the team are freshmen Naila Moseley, Karesa Granderson, Sarah Dimson and 6-foot-6 Carolyn Moos. The men, meanwhile, return eight of their top nine scorers from last season's 22-8 squad. The freshman class features twins Jason and Jarron Collins, plus point guard Michael McDonald. The men are ranked as high at ninth in one preseason publication while the women are rated as high as fifth in another.
HOMECOMING . . . The Menlo College football team (2-4) can take a big step toward a .500 season or better with a victory over Redlands (4-1) on Saturday in Atherton. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m. With four games left on their schedule, the Oaks need to bounce back from last weekend's frustrating 24-21 loss at Chapman. Redlands, however, has beaten Menlo four of the past five times the teams have met--including a 48-20 drubbing last season. The Oaks need to do a better job in the penalty department after being flagged 13 times for 131 yards last weekend. Menlo is averaging 11 1/2 penalties for 102 yards per game. Menlo's statistical leaders include running back Dan Nguyen (395 yards on 54 carries), quarterback Jon DeVille (78 of 147 for 919 yards and seven TDs), and receiver Cornelius Ruff (30 catches for 380 yards and three TDs).
LOCAL NOTES . . . Palo Alto resident Raelyn Jacobson, an 8th-grader at Castilleja, broke into the top 25 of the U.S. Fencing Association's official national women's Under-14 epee rankings recently. Jacobson achieved this ranking by reaching the finals (top eight) at the North American Cup tournament in Denver. She also placed 22nd in the women's Under-14 foil . . . Palo Alto High grad Robert Conlon and Gunn grad Brendan Callahan both arer playing soccer at UC Davis this fall . . . Jennifer Reese of Palo Alto and Sara Silano of Menlo Park were among the local competitors who helped the San Mateo Gymnastics Club finish third at the 1997 High-Tech Invitational in Rancho Cordova last weekend . . . The Tomahawks Lacrosse Club will conduct registration and hold an information meeting on Tuesday, from 7:15-9 p.m. in Room C3 at Jordan Middle School. GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY . . . Wrestling coaches and athletes will have a chance to meet Olympic gold medalist Kendall Cross on Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon for a special clinic. The event, sponsored by the Dave Schultz Wrestling Foundation, will be held in the Stanford wrestling room, located in the basement of the Arrillaga Family Sports Center. The cost if $25, which includes free admission to Saturday's Stanford-Arizona State football game at 12:30 p.m. Coaches bringing eight or more wrestlers will be admitted free to the clinic.
