STANFORD ROUNUP: Cardinal hosts nation's top water polo tourneyAlumni baseball game and men's soccer showdown on SundaySixteen of the nation's top 20 teams will battle it out Saturday and Sunday at Stanford's deGuerre Pool in the 1997 Northern California Water Polo Tournament. "There is no other tournament field like this one in collegiate water polo this year," Stanford coach Dante Dettamanti said. The field includes No. 1 Pepperdine (12-0), No. 2 Cal (9-2), No. 3 USC (7-3) and No. 4 Stanford (8-3). Pepperdine (8 a.m.) and Stanford 10:20 a.m.) open play at deGuerre Pool while USC and Cal will play at West Valley College. Saturday's top teams will play at Stanford on Sunday, with the championship match set for 5 p.m. Baseball Stanford's annual alumni baseball doubleheader will be Sunday at Sunken Diamond. Admission is free. A three-inning Oldtimers' game featuring graduates from as far back as 1934 begins at noon. Following will be a nine-inning contest between the 1997-98 Cardinal and alumni. The day will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Stanford's first College World Series crown in 1987. Many of the members of the '87 and '88 CWS championship teams will be in attendance. Women's golf Stanford closed with a rush on the final day to finish second at the annual Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Redmond, Wash. The Cardinal had its best effort, a 295, on Wednesday to finish with an 893 total--12 strokes behind first-place Tulsa. Stanford freshman Hilary Homeyer shot rounds of 71-72-72 on the par-72 Sahalee Country Club course to finish second overall at 213. The Cardinal will host the Stanford Women's Intercollegiate on Oct. 24-26 at the Stanford Golf Course. Men's soccer Nationally No. 6-ranked Stanford (2-0-1, 10-0-2) will play host to California on Sunday at 2 p.m., with a victory clinching the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (Mountain Division) title for the Cardinal. --Keith Peters
