Tennis teams net victoriesCastilleja, Palo Alto, Pinewood, Gunn girls all in good positionCastilleja remained in first. Palo Alto and Pinewood put themselves in position to challenge for first. And Gunn moved closer to first. That was the bottom line in girls tennis earlier this week. Castilleja (5-0, 6-0) continued to roll in the Private Schools Athletic League with a 7-0 dispoing of visiting Notre Dame-San Jose. Pinewood (4-1, 7-6) kept pace with a 6-1 win over Redwood Christian. That set up yesterday's showdown between Castilleja and Pinewood. Palo Alto (7-1, 9-5) set up yesterday's duel with Mountain View--with first place in the SCVAL El Camino Division at stake--with an easy 7-0 blanking of host Santa Clara. And Gunn (5-4, 6-4) moved into a tie for third place (with St. Francis) in the SCVAL De Anza Division with a crucial 4-3 win over visiting Monta Vista. The Titans lost three of four singles matches, but made up difference in doubles where Kirsten Hentz and Lexi Suppes battled back from a 6-4 first-set loss to win the second, 7-6 (7-3). They clinched the victory with a 6-3 third-set triumph. The doubles duos of Michelle Feng-Belin Liu and Sue Ann Ma-Irene Yang won in straight sets to set the stage for Hentz-Suppes and their No. 1 doubles victory. Elsewhere, Menlo-Atherton snapped a losing streak in the Peninsula Athletic League with a 5-2 win over Carlmont, but was unable to make it two straight while falling to Aragon on Wednesday, 6-1. Girls volleyball It was a rough early part of the week for Menlo School, Gunn and Menlo-Atherton as all fell in division play. Menlo (1-4, 13-6) was swept by Sacred Heart Cathedral in GPSL action, 15-7, 15-9, 15-9. Gunn (4-3, 17-11) saw its SCVAL El Camino Division title hopes pretty much disappear in a 15-8, 15-2, 5-15, 15-10 loss at Milpitas. And Menlo-Atherton dropped its seventh straight PAL Bay Division match, a five-game loss to Half Moon Bay.
