STANFORD REUNION . . . Stanford's only two National Players of the Year, Jennifer Azzi and Kate Starbird, will take the court opposite each other when the San Jose Lasers and Seattle Reign open their 1997 American Basketball League seasons Wednesday night at the San Jose Arena. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. Azzi, who missed most of last season with a shoulder injury, is making her first appearance since Game 11 of last year. Azzi was Stanford's first National Player of the Year when she led the Cardinal to the 1990 NCAA title. Starbird, who earned the same honor last season while guiding the Cardinal to the NCAA Final Four, will be making her professional debut Wednesday night. In addition to Azzi and Starbird, both teams are blessed with other former Stanford players. The Lasers feature Anita Kaplan and Sonja Henning, while Seattle's roster includes Kate Paye, Christy Hedgpeth and Val Whiting, who was traded by San Jose to Seattle last season. GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY . . . Wrestling coaches and athletes will have a chance to meet Olympic gold medalist Kendall Cross on Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon for a special clinic. The event, sponsored by the Dave Schultz Wrestling Foundation, will be held in the Stanford wrestling room, located in the basement of the Arrillaga Family Sports Center. The cost if $25, which includes free admission to Saturday's Stanford-Arizona State football game at 12:30 p.m. Coaches bringing eight or more wrestlers will be admitted free to the clinic.
GRABBING GLORY . . . One year ago, Greg Clark was blocking and catching passes for the Stanford football team. Last Sunday, Clark was doing the same for the San Francisco 49ers. Clark, who was drafted for his size and blocking talents, turned out to be a pretty good receiver. In the sixth game of his NFL career, Clark got his first reception and first touchdown in the 49ers' 30-10 victory over the St. Louis Rams. Clark's first reception was an 11-yarder from Steve Young in the first quarter. Two plays later, Clark was on the receiving end of a 10-yarder for a touchdown.
BOOT CAMP . . . Interested in getting in shape for the holidays? Then the Stanford Boot Camp is for you. The next session of this five-week fitness program, offered by the Stanford Athletic Department and TimeOut Services, Inc., begins Oct. 27. Classes, held at 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., run five weeks (25 sessions total). Cost is $200 per person. Each session offers running or walking, weight training, stair climbing, stretching and more.
