STANFORD SIGNINGS . . . Two of the top women's water polo players in the country will be competing for Stanford next fall. Margie Dingeldein, a member of the U.S. Junior National women's water polo team, and Jackie Frank, a first-team All-American goalie, signed national letters of intent Wednesday to join the Cardinal for the 1998-99 season. "We are very excited that these two have decided to join our program," said first-year coach John Tanner. Both of them are extremely talented athletes and excellent students." Dingeldein, a 5-foot-6 driver/defender, was named to the 1197 USWP Junior National Championship first team. Frank, 5-11, was the MVP of that same national championship squad and was the starting goalie onthe bronze medal-winning U.S. Junior National Team that competed at the Junior World Championships in Prague earlier this year . . . The Stanford women's softball coach John Rittman has signed five recruits to national letters of intent: Sarah Beeson, Christina Chao, Jessica Mendoza, Robin Walker and Susan Winkelman. Beeson was first-team all-state first baseman in Arizona; Mendoza was first-team All-CIF utility player at Camarillo High; Walker was a shortstop on the 1996 CIF championship team at Mater Dei High; while Winkelman will provide added depth to the pitching staff.

HOOP NOTES . . . The Stanford men's and women's basketball teams opened their exhibition seasons this week with easy victories. The men, getting 21 points off the bench from Ryan Mendez, breezed past Silute of Lithuania, 93-71, on Monday. Mendez, a sophomore, hit eight of 11 shots, including five three-pointers. Peter Sauer added 16 points while freshman Jason Collins contributed 10 points, as did guard Kamba Tshionyi. Junior center Tim Young pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. The Stanford women opened their season with an 88-63 exhibition win over Kosice of Slovakia. Senior center and Naismith Player of the Year candidate Olympia Scott led the Cardinal with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

CARDINAL CORNER . . . With its fourth straight Pacific-10 Conference title all wrapped up, the No. 3-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team will continue its quest for an undefeated conference season when the Cardinal (15-0, 24-2) plays host to Washington tonight (7:30 p.m, Bay TV) and Washington State on Saturday (7 p.m.) in Maples Pavilion . . . The No. 3-ranked Stanford men's water polo team will play host to UC Davis on Saturday at noon, then take on USC on Sunday (noon) in deGuerre Pool.
