A COOL TITLE . . . Menlo-Atherton High baseball players Ray Kellam and Bodey Dressler combined their efforts away from the diamond to bring the Belmont Rangers Midget B ice hockey team a state championship last weekend at the Oakland Ice Center. Kellam and Dressler scored the only goals as Belmont defeated South Coast, 2-0, to become the only Northern California team to win a state crown. Next up for the M-A students will be the NorCal All-Star hockey game April 26 at the Fremont Ice-O-Plex.
HONOR FOR WIDEMAN . . . Stanford basketball standout Jamila Wideman did get the NCAA championship she wanted this season, but the senior guard did receive something quite special--a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship. Wideman received one of 32 such scholarships awarded to basketball players by the NCAA, 16 going to women. Wideman is planning on attending law school following graduation.
SHOOTING FOR CROWN . . . The Stanford Tsunami, an Under-16 Girls Class I CYSA team, will compete in the State Cup quarterfinals on Saturday in Morgan Hill in hopes of advancing to Sunday's semifinals. The team includes: Catie Carlson, Amaretta Evans, Christie Ginanni, Laura Green, Siena Kautz, Erin Keplinger, Ja'net Lawrence, Tina Lee, Tristan Ngoon, Lily Robinton, Ashlee Rosenthal, Emily Schuman, Ruth Selby, Emily Shannon, Laura Tatum, Katy Tripp and Chelsea Voss.
SOCCER STUFF . . . The Palo Alto Soccer Club will be holding tryouts for its Under-15 Boys Class III CYSA team beginning Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Cubberley fields. Other tryouts will be Sunday from 2:30-4:30 p.m., April 23 from 4-5:30 p.m. and April 26 from 10 a.m. to noon, all at Cubberley. Information: 424-9751 . . . BAY TO BREAKERS BUS . . . Those runners looking for transportation to San Francisco for the annual Bay to Breakers on May 18 can look no further. Palo Alto Recreation has added a second bus to transport runners to the race. Buses will leave Lucie Stern Community Center at 6:15 a.m. and return at approximately at 1 p.m. Cost is $15 round trip. SPRING GAME . . . The annual Stanford football Cardinal & White Game, which concludes spring practice, will be held April 26 in Stanford Stadium. A free Football Kids Clinic (8th graders and younger) with Stanford coaches and players will run from 10:30-11:30 a.m., followed by the spring game until 1 p.m. Registration for the clinic, which includes a free T-shirt, is from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
