Big series for Stanford: No. 1 UCLA

The most important series, thus far, of the season gets under way tonight for the No. 5-ranked Stanford baseball team when it takes the field at Sunken Diamond to face No. 2 UCLA at 7 p.m.

Stanford (13-5, 28-11) holds just a one-game lead over UCLA (12-6, 32-10-1) with three series left in the Pac-10 Conference Southern Division. While Stanford will play seven of its final 12 Six-Pac games at home, the Cardinal still must visit the Bruins on the final week of the regular season.

Thus, this weekend is huge for Stanford, which tuned up by posting a 12-6 nonconference win over visiting San Jose State on Tuesday night. Senior Luke Quaccia and freshman John Gall each had homers among their two hits and each collected three RBI. Josh Hochgesang extended his hitting streak to 19 games with three hits.

That also describes the situation facing the Cardinal men's tennis team, which improved to 20-2 this week with a 6-1 Pac-10 victory over visiting Cal.

The competition gets much tougher starting today when Stanford plays host to USC at 1:30 p.m. The big weekend match comes Saturday against No. 1 UCLA at noon.
