Tennis title may be spark Paly needs

The Palo Alto tennis team likely is better than its overall record of 7-8 this season. That was evident last weekend when the Vikings captured the team crown and four individual titles at the annual Logan Tournament in Fremont.

David Wermuth won at No. 1 singles, Neil Berman captured the No. 2 singles crown, Cully Thomas took home honors at No. 5 singles and the team of Wermuth and Berman swept to a 6-2, 6-3 triumph to win that division.

Cedric Mazzara lost in the finals at No. 3 and Mike Reboh reached the semifinals at No. 4 before falling.

Palo Alto, which has won a record six straight Central Coast Section team titles, has lost more matches this season than in the previous six when it went 134-6.

The Vikings, who won't be favored to repeat as CCS champs this season, were in a similar position the past two years--yet emerged on top.
