GEARING UP FOR GAMES . . . Stanford graduate Jair Lynch won the floor exercise and was runner-up in two other events and in the all-around competition at the American Cup in Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday. Lynch, a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team in Barcelona, Spain, is a strong candidate to make this year's team in Atlanta, Ga. He scored 56.887 to finish behind John Roethlisberger (57.611), four-time world champion and defending American Cup champ. Lynch won the floor (9.65) and was second in the pommel horse (9.687) and horizontal bar (9.750) . . . On Sunday, former Cardinal All-American Kristin Klein had three aces as Team USA lost to Cuba, 15-10, 15-7, 16-14, in Dallas, Texas. She and teammate Kristin Folkl, a Stanford sophomore, are still among the candidates to make the '96 Olympic Team . . . In Florida, Stanford senior Jeremy Laster scored three goals and assisted on a game-winner to help the U.S. National Water Polo Team win two of three matches against Russia in the Kodak Challenge. After scoring twice in Saturday's 12-11 win, he assisted Kyle Kopp for the eventual game-winner with 5:20 remaining in Sunday's 11-10 win. Laster had scored with 6:22 left to make it 10-10. The U.S. National Team consists of 21 players under Olympic head coach Richard Corso. The team wil be trimmed to 15 players by May 27 following the U.S. Open in Nashville, Tenn.

CARDINAL RECRUIT . . . Mitty High's Kerri Walsh, who'll play for the Stanford women's volleyball team in the fall, will bring quite an honor with her. Walsh, who led the Monarchs' basketball team into the NorCal playoffs Tuesday night, last week was named the first Gatorade Circle of Champions national high school volleyball player of the year by The Gatorade Company and Scholastic Coach magazine. The national award, which is based on overall athletic and academic performance throughout her high school career, distinguished the 6-foot-3 Walsh as the best high school volleyball player in the nation. She was selected from more than 315,000 players. Walsh previously was selected as the Central Coast Section player of the year, California player of the year, Pacific Region player of the year. Walsh led Mitty to a 38-3 record and the Division I state title this past season. She compiled 516 kills, 283 digs, 177 blocks and 48 service aces during her four-year career. She carries a 3.5 grade-point average.

FUN RUN . . . The City of Palo Alto and the Girl Scouts of Santa Clara County sponsor the "7th Annual Girl Scout Fun Run", consisting of a 5K run and 1K and 5K walks at the Palo Alto Baylands Center. Races begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Entry fees are $15 for a T-shirt and $10 for T-shirts for families. Late and race-day registration costs $10 (without a shirt).
