TENNIS UPSET . . . Three was definitely not a charm for Saratoga High senior Michael Jessup, the two-time defending Central Coast Section singles champion. Portola Valley resident Cory Guy made sure of that in the CCS individual tournament last week at Imperial Courts in Aptos. Guy, a junior at St. Francis High, stunned the defending champ in the singles final by rallying from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to post a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) victory. The victory by Guy (24-2) avenged a loss to Jessup earlier in the season. Guy reached the finals by eliminating Stanford-bound Misha Palacek of Menlo-Atherton High, 6-3, 6-1.
TRIATHLON CHAMP . . . Palo Alto resident Kathy Frank has been quite successful the past two weeks while competing in triathlons. She won the women's masters division at the Cabrillo Triathlon on Sunday near Santa Cruz, completing the half-mile ocean swim, 18-mile bike ride and five-mile run in two hours, four minutes. A week earlier, Frank won the women's 45-49 division at the SouthBay Triathlon at Uvas Reservoir near Morgan Hill. She took two hours to complete the three-quarter-mile swim, 17-mile bike ride and five-mile swim.
NEW COACH AT MENLO . . . Menlo College has named Delna Lancaster as head coach of its women's volleyball team. Lancaster, a 1990 graduate of Menlo, has spent the past two seasons as the Oaks' assistant coach, guiding them to the NCAA Division II West Region playoffs in 1992. Lancaster replaces Sheri Ostrand, who left Menlo to pursue other career opportunities.
HALL OF FAMER . . . Stanford head field hockey coach Sheryl Johnson is the newest member of the United States Field Hockey Association Hall of Fame. Johnson, a 1980 Cal graduate and resident of Cupertino, became the 32nd inductee into the hockey hall Sunday during ceremonies at Ursinus College. Johnson was a member of the 1980, '84 and '88 U.S. Olympic teams and a member of the U.S. National Team from 1979-91. She has been Stanford's head coach for nine years, during which time she has led Stanford to five NorPac Conference championships and five appearances in the NCAA playoffs.
