WRESTLING WITH PROBLEM . . . Wrestlers from Gunn, Palo Alto and Menlo-Atherton highs will have their hands full this weekend at the CCS individual championships at Independence High in San Jose. Gunn qualifiers are Daniel Bradley (112 pounds), Steve Wharton (119) and Joe Escobar (189). Paly has Jens Mueller (125), Jarom Feriante (145) and Tim Munn (171), while M-A's representatives will be Andres Pech (119) and Franado Esperza (140).

HOOP CHAMPS . . . Carson City walked off with top honors, while Hillview of Menlo Park earned consolation honors, as the 30th annual Atherton Lion's Club Boys 8th Grade Invitational Basketball Tournament that concluded Sunday at Cubberley Pavilion. Hillview defeated Parkside, 46-37, in the consolation final as Sal Almanza scored 22 points. Almanza wound up winning high-point honors, scoring 49 points in four games. He was named to the all-tournament second team along with Isaac Gradman of Jordan Middle School.

LEAVING THEIR MARKS . . . Menlo School students Stephanie Mydgley and Lindsey Ferris both produced some noteworthy performances during the National Age-Group Indoor Track and Field Championships, which concluded last weekend in Lawrence, Kan. Mydgley and Ferris both finished one-two in the 17-18 age-group pentathlon, where Mydgley set a national record with 2,690 points. She ran 9.40 in the 55-meter hurdles, cleared 5-feet-6 in the high jump, put the shot 26-9, long-jumped 14-0 3/4 and ran the 800 meters in 2:40.4. Mydgley also finished second in the individual high jump and fifth in the long jump. Ferris was second in the pentathlon with 2,505 points. She also took third in the age-group high jump and seventh in the 800.

IN THE SWIM . . . Palo Alto High graduates Josiah Pettersen and James Kennedy each registered victories to help Whitman College (Walla Walla, Wash.) rout Evergreen State College, 165-35, in a men's swim meet recently. Pettersen (Class of '91) won the 1,000-yard free while Kennedy (Class of '92) won the 100 free and swam a leg on the winning 400 free relay team.

KIDS AND INJURIES . . . Dr. James Gamble, an orthopedist at Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital, and Dr. ken Vereschagin, a Sunnyvale pediatrician and chair of the Santa Clara County Medical Association Committee on Sports Medicine, will lead an evening clinic, "Prevention and Care of Children's Sports Injuries" on March 3, at 3 p.m. in the Packard Children's Hospital cafeteria, 725 Welch Road. The clinic is free, and open to children, parents and coaches. Those interested in attending should reserve space by calling 725-8400.
