CCS BOYS BASKETBALL: M-A advances with 72-60 win

Menlo-Atherton's boys basketball team showed a few flashes of brilliance in Wednesday's 72-60 victory at Andrew Hill, just in time for M-A's CCS Division II quarterfinal opponent Mills.

The Vikings (21-7), coming off a first-round victory over Jefferson, beat the Bears (14-10) twice during the Peninsula Athletic League season. The teams meet Saturday at College of Notre Dame at 2 p.m.

M-A, which entered the Hill contest having lost five of six games, looked excellent at times and shaky at others. Guard Curtis Haggins (16 points), in addition to providing slick moves in the paint and nice dish-offs to his mates, chipped in some clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch.

After Hill had sliced a heretofore M-A lead of 57-42 to 61-55 with 1:01 left, Haggins was fouled three times in the span of 53 seconds. He sank his six free throws--all one-and-one situations--to help M-A extend its lead to 69-57 with 1:01 remaining. He was 10 of 14 from the line in the final period. He also had five steals and seven assists.

Sam Batchelder led M-A with 23 points and seven rebounds.1 n
