TRIAL BY FIRE . . . The Stanford pitching staff will get another test this weekend when the Cardinal baseball team visits Fresno State for a three-game nonconference series starting Friday. Stanford's young and untested staff was rocked for 26 runs and 37 hits last weekend during a 1-2 showing against Cal State Fullerton at Sunken Diamond. The Titans won the opener, 12-2, with Stanford winning the second game, 7-6, as sophomore Todd Bartels allowed just seven hits in six innings of work to gain the win. A single by Dusty Allen and a sacrifice fly by Cale Carter provided the winning runs. On Sunday, Stanford had a chance to win the series, but pitching was spotty early and relief help by freshman Tom Reimers came up just short as the Cardinal fell in 11 innings, 8-7. Reimers pitched the fourth through the 11th, holding Fullerton scoreless for six innings. Stanford rallied from a 6-0 deficit after two innings behind a 13-hit attack.

A WINNING TUNEUP . . . The top-ranked and undefeated (4-0) Stanford women's swim team prepared for Saturday's key intersectional against Texas by dunking both USC (173-127) and UCLA (174-24) last weekend in Los Angeles. The Cardinal got its usual strong performances from Olympians Jenny Thompson and Lea Loveless, who combined for 10 victories and three relay victories in the two triumphs. Coach Richard Quick also received strong outings from junior Becky Crowe and freshman Sarah Anderson. Crowe swept the 100 and 200 butterfly races both days, including a huge victory in the 200 fly over USC freshman sensation Kristine Quance. Anderson won both the 1,650 and 500 freestyles against USC, and added the 1,000 free against the Bruins. The top-ranked Stanford men, meanwhile, improved to 7-0 in dual meets by dumping host UC Santa Barbara, 158-121. The Cardinal will travel to Los Angeles this weekend to face USC and UCLA.

THE NET RESULT . . . The Stanford men's and women's tennis teams were off to 3-0 starts as the week began following weekend sweeps. The No. 2-ranked men downed Hawaii, 7-0, and UC San Diego, 6-1, while the No. 2 women disposed of Hawaii, 9-0, and Washington, 8-1. Robert Devens led the way for the men with a pair of victories at No. 1 singles, while Kristine Kurth did likewise for the women at No. 1.

VOLLEYBALL HOMESTAND . . . The No. 4-ranked Stanford men's volleyball team will continue its current six-game homestand by taking on San Diego State on Friday night in Maples Pavilion at 7 p.m. The Cardinal, which faced UC Irvine on Monday night, opened its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation season Saturday by rallying past visiting Loyola Marymount, 15-7, 14-16, 12-15, 15-1, 16-14, as freshman Matt Fuerbringer had 36 kills and hit .604 for the Cardinal.
