MUSHROOM HUNT . . . Wade Leschyn of the Mycological Society of San Francisco will lead a hike on mushroom collecting and identification at Hidden Villa Wilderness Preserve in Los Altos Hills on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Learn to distinguish edible and poisonous mushrooms. Bring a basket for collecting specimens, a small knife and a bag lunch if desired. Open to ages 10 and up. The cost is $8 per person. Call 949-8653 to register.

SUCCESSFUL REMODELING . . . An essential one-day short course for the homeowner in avoiding problems, saving money and time, and reducing headaches and inconveniences during remodeling will be presented Saturday, Feb. 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Charleston Center, 535 E. FRUIT TREE PRUNING . . . Bring your pruning shears to a class led by Kevin Raftery at Common Ground on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Common Ground. Raftery will show how to tell dead wood from healthy, dormant wood, and how to shape different types of fruit trees to maximize health and fruit production. The class will meet at Common Ground and will proceed to work at a local orchard. Dress appropriately and bring a bag lunch. Cost is $20. To register, call 328-6752.

FLOWER ARRANGING . . . The Florets Garden Club will present Fusako Hoyrup in a flower arranging show entitled "Enjoying the simplicity of ikebana" on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, 670 East Meadow Drive, Palo Alto. FILOLI LECTURE . . .More than 100 gardens are maintained by the UK's National Trust at sites in the British Isles. Stephen Lacey will initiate Filoli's 1998 series with a lecture on these fabulous gardens on Thursday, Feb. 12. Lacey will provide a personal overview of the National Trust gardens, setting them in historical context and exploring their plantings and design. Admission is $20, including refreshments.
