What's happening here?Where: 460-468 University Ave., Palo Alto What: The 1927 building, designed by Birge Clark, is being completely renovated inside, with the addition of 4,600 square feet of office space on the second floor and seismic upgrades. Who: The building, next to the old Hotel President, is owned by Barry Real Estate of Palo Alto, and the work is being done by Gianino Construction of Redwood City. Project: Contractors are gutting the building's interior and installing a steel "cage" to help protect the historic building from earthquakes. A second floor will be added, extending the existing mezzanine. The exterior will be painted, and storefronts restored to their original 1920s look. Three of the five tenants--Shaska, Elite Cleaners and American Beauty Salon--will move back in. The salon will take two spaces, and an art gallery will occupy the remaining space. Impact: From time to time, the six parking spaces in front of the building will be reserved for construction vehicles. When: Work began July 1, 1997, and is expected to be completed by Jan. 1, 1998.
