NEIGHBORHOOD GRANTS . . . Palo Alto's Evergreen Park neighborhood is among the first of the Peninsula neighborhood groups to receive a neighborhood grant from the Peninsula Community Foundation. Evergreen's $5,100 grant will help a group of parents and children in the neighborhood learn sign language so that they can communicate with the deaf baby girl of a new family in the neighborhood. The parents were concerned that they and their children would not be able to talk to the little girl, and thought of learning sign language to make the little girl feel a part of the "family." The grant will pay for books, materials and 72 hours of sign language instruction.

PLANT A TREE . . . The Palo Verde Neighborhood Association and Canopy, Trees for Palo Alto will be planting two varieties of trees on Saturday, Nov. 8, on three streets, Evergreen, Talisman and Thornwood. The new trees, 23 pistache and red oaks, will be planted by neighbors and Canopy volunteers. Besides planting trees, volunteers are needed to provide refreshments and act as gofers. If you're interested in volunteering, contact Barry and Alice Fasbender at 494-3128, Roland Finston at 494-0287 or Canopy at 964-6110. The event will begin with a tree-planting demonstration at 8:30 a.m. at 845 Talisman (at Lupine). Afterward, volunteers will split into groups to plant the rest of the trees.

CALIFORNIA AVENUE ART . . . Local artist Oscar Castillo is painting an underwater design on the pedestrian tunnel at the end of California Avenue near the Caltrain station. Students trained by Castillo will paint more than 100 fish on the mural. The idea, which began last year, involves training students to use spray paint to create art instead of graffiti. The project will take place through Oct. 28 and is sanctioned by the California Avenue Area Development Association and the city of Palo Alto.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED . . . The Palo Alto Historical Association needs volunteers to help with a historic building survey to update the city's historic inventory. Survey volunteers are needed to do field work, historical research, photography, word processing and other tasks. Six training sessions will be conducted in November. For more information, call Nancy Huber at 327-2541.
