POLICE: Gunman robs Whole Foods grocery store

Two former store employees later arrested

A man with a shotgun robbed the Whole Foods Market in Palo Alto late Saturday night, getting away with the day's receipts.

But police quickly arrested two people identified as former Whole Foods employees--Stephen Ruffin, 25, and Caroline DeElespp, 21, both of Mountain View.

According to officer Jason Bosworth, two Whole Foods employees were confronted by a man with a shotgun about 11:02 p.m. Saturday, an hour after the Homer Avenue store closed for the night.

The man then struck one of the two employees and fled with the money.

Both Ruffin and DeElespp were identified by the store's employees as the suspects and were later arrested, Bosworth said. Both are also identified by police as being former store employees.

Ruffin and DeElespp were booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on charges of armed robbery and conspiracy.

Whole Foods is a Texas-based company that expanded into California in 1989 when the Palo Alto store opened.
