East Palo Alto City Manager Jerry Groomes will have the benefit of a federal worker who has been assigned to work with him for a year, beginning in April.
Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto, was able to secure funds for the worker from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The EPA is already working in East Palo Alto, completing a project of mapping underground chemical contamination in the Ravenswood Industrial Park area. Earlier, an Environmental Protection Agency worker was assigned to the city for six months.
"East Palo Alto has environmental and housing problems that need to be addressed, and the new federal employee will help get the job done," Eshoo said.
A year ago, Eshoo hosted a summit meeting of federal officials in East Palo Alto, bringing together representatives of nine federal agencies with city officials to discuss ways in which the federal government could help the city.
"It's a continuing commitment from the federal summit meeting of a year ago," City Manager Jerry Groomes said. "It will provide us additional management staff to take on new projects."
The federal worker will be responsible for developing proposals for grant and loan programs through researching federal programs for which the city may qualify.
