Weekly launches Holiday Fund

Families and children to benefit from third annual community campaign

The East Palo Alto Senior Center received $5,000 to help grandparents who are raising grandchildren. Palo Alto Community Child Care was awarded $1,000 to set up a child care center at the old Ventura school site.

And the PTA Wardrobe received $500 to purchase socks and underwear for schoolchildren from low-income homes.

These were some of the 34 programs that benefited from the $88,000 awarded in grants from last year's Holiday Fund drive.

Peninsula residents and businesses again have an opportunity to show their support for local groups serving the needs of children and families by giving to the third annual Palo Alto Weekly Holiday Fund.

Beginning in today's edition (see notice on page 36), residents are encouraged to fill out a fund drive form and donate to this community-wide fund-raising campaign. This year, individual donations sent in to the Holiday Fund will be matched dollar-for-dollar for up to $30,000.

All of the money donated to the Holiday Fund will once again be distributed to local non-profit organizations serving children and families.

"We're proud to once again be able to spearhead this community tradition," said Weekly Publisher Bill Johnson. "I wish readers could hear the calls of appreciation that I got last spring from people who benefit from these grants. The level of appreciation for those who have contributed to this campaign is extraordinary."

All who give $25 or more will be acknowledged in each issue of the Palo Alto Weekly from late November until the end of the campaign in mid-January. Grants will be awarded in April.

Non-profit groups that want to be considered for grants may request an application by calling 326-8210. Applications will be accepted until Jan. 31.
