COMMUNITY: Bike rodeo planned for Saturday

Free bicycle helmets will be given away to East Palo Alto children at a bike rodeo on Saturday.

The rodeo, at Ronald McNair School, 2033 Pulgas Ave., will be held at 10 a.m. March 18.

It will feature games and entertainment, along with some already scheduled bicycle races. The Menlo Park Fire Prevention District will participate, along with the East Palo Palo Police Department, the California Highway Patrol and the Major Taylor Cycling Club, which started a chapter for the East Palo Alto area last August. A search-and-rescue helicopter also will be on display.

The bike rodeo is the first of four that will be held in the city this year, said Sgt. Nick Bennett.

The city has 3,000 bike helmets to give away, thanks to a state traffic safety grant.

"We'll be giving out bike helmets to those youngsters who don't have one and need one," Bennett said, adding that the children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The police will also register bicycles at the event, which helps discourage bicycle theft.
