BLACKS IN AMERICA . . . Kennell Jackson, a Stanford history professor, has published "America is Me," an introduction to the history of blacks in America. "Basically, it's about blacks in America, what they brought here, how they have been transformed and how they have transformed the country," Jackson said. "There are essays on virtually every kind of ideology that there is among blacks." The book also offers answers to the 170 most commonly asked questions about the history of blacks in America.
STEINBECK NEWS . . . The Steinbeck Center Foundation of Salinas has received a $1 million gift, which is a big step toward building a Steinbeck museum and memorial. The gift was from the Harden Foundation, a Salinas Valley family foundation.
LOCAL POET IS HONORED . . . "Playing With Fire" by Patrick Daly of Menlo Park was chosen from among 70 entries to be the second book published in the Abby Niebauer Memorial Chapbook Series by Jacaranda Press. Neibauer was a Palo Alto poet who died in 1985. Daly has been published in a number of literary magazines.
MURDER MOST FOUL . . . Lora Roberts of Palo Alto has published the third in her Liz Sullivan mystery series. While the first two, including "Murder in the Marketplace," were set in Palo Alto, this time Sullivan goes to Denver for a family visit, and then . . . Lora says that Liz Sullivan will return to her familiar Palo Alto in the next mystery.
