Mixed-media digital prints by Dianne Erickson are on display through Jan. 31 at Suzanne's Muffins, 235 State St., Los Altos. Starting with her own photographs, paintings and found objects, Erickson creates new art pieces by combining images, adjusting color and lighting and using layers and filters to achieve a particular mood or effect. The name Kodo means "heartbeat" or "children of the drum." Coming to Stanford's Memorial Auditorium on Jan. 21-23, Kodo brings a drum-driven, energetic vibe that mixes sacred tradition with current musical moods. We'll have a preview.

Columnist Laura Reiley visits Palo Alto's Museum of American Heritage and its exhibit, "A Century of Construction Toys." The display showcases Erector and Mercaccano outfits, Lincoln Logs, Anchor Blocks and other construction toys dating from the turn of the century.

We review one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the new year, "Hurlyburly," which opens in local theaters Friday. The film boasts an all-star cast of Sean Penn, Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright Penn, Chazz Palminteri, Garry Shandling and Meg Ryan.
