IT'S MAGIC . . . The Palo Alto Children's Theatre celebrates the opening of the "Magic Castle"--a unique, new outdoor stage and theater shop--when donors gather on May 31 to mark completion of the facility. Financed by a private-public partnership between the nonprofit Friends of the Children's Theatre organization and the City of Palo Alto, the castle-like stage is part of a $1.2 million addition to the Children's Theatre which also includes construction of the new Wang Library and renovation of shop space. The dedication ceremony will feature expressions of appreciation to the project donors, a historical overview of the theater, original music by composer Joan Lomax and acceptance of the Friends' gift of the Roy Ginsberg Outdoor Stage to the city by Mayor Dick Rosenbaum and City Manager June Fleming. For more information, call 329-2216.

HERE'S RITA . . . Adolescent Counseling Services, founded in 1975 as Palo Alto Adolescent Services Corporation, invites folks to an evening with Rita Moreno on Saturday, June 6, at Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara. Moreno is the only female performer to win all four of the most prestigious entertainment awards (Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Grammy). Advanced reservations are required. For information about tickets, call 424-0852.

THUMBS UP . . . Regional winners for the 25th Anniversary Student Academy Awards competition have been selected and the films are now being screened and voted upon by members of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences (the same professional film artists and craftspeople who vote to select Oscar statuette-winning films). As many as three filmmakers in each of the four categories will be honored on June 14 in Beverly Hills with trophies and cash prizes. Two Stanford students--Yuriko Gamo Romer and Aaron Lubarsky--have been voted regional winners in the Documentary Category. Romer won for his film "Occidental Encounters" and Lubarsky won for "Wayne Freedman's Notebook."

MORE DONNAS . . . Yes, you are tuned in to the Donnnas information central. After appearing in a full-page story in Rolling Stone earlier this month, this four-piece rock band from Palo Alto will now be featured on MTV. Way to go, ladies.
