Environmental

Celebrate the earth

Midtown Palo Alto will celebrate Earth Day '98 in style this year, as Bay Area Action, a local environmental education and action organization, and the Knowhere Store, an interactive business providing process for the knowledge intensive workplace, host "An Earth Day Evening" from 7:30 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, at the Knowhere Store, 2741 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.

The event will host about 125 guests and feature the music of singer/songwriter Rebeka Jaqua and the dynamic drumming group Village Heartbeat. "Food Coach" Laura Stec will cater an appetizer buffet, featuring foods from local restaurants and markets, and EEAT (the Environmental Eating Action Team) will offer tastings of local foods spiced with environmental awareness and concern. Organic Express will supply the produce, grown in our own South Bay soil. And the Knowhere Store will surround guests with a show of touch, sound and sight, under its skydome canopy and the night's (hopefully) twinkling stars.

The schedule of events is as follows: Appetizer buffet at 7:30 p.m.; performance by Rebeka Jaqua at 8:15 p.m.; performance by Village Heart Beat at 9:30 p.m.

Advanced tickets are $15 for BAA members and $20 for nonmembers. At the door, tickets will be $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. For more information, call 321-1994.

Classical

Experience the Renaissance

Hailed as the leading exponent of Renaissance sacred vocal music, the Tallis Scholars bring their a cappella precision to Stanford University's Memorial Church on Wednesday, April 22, at 8 p.m.

The Tallis Scholars' concerts in Memorial Church have rightfully become highly anticipated events on all sides of the Bay, and this season Stanford is "the pride of Britain's" only Northern California stop. Stanford University, where the Scholars performed their first concert on the U.S. West Coast, welcomes the ensemble's return this season, bringing a program of the Victoria Requiem, a spirited tribute to the 450th anniversary of the birth of Spanish composer Tomas Luis de Victoria. Motets by Guerrero, Lobo, Morales and Victoria commence the evening.

Tickets are $28 (students $3 off; youth 15 and under, half-price). For more information, call 725-ARTS.
