See them compete Thursday

Nationals-bound Emily Bobel of Palo Alto also will be on ice tomorrow

Leo Unger was not the only Palo Alto-area skater to qualify for a national competition last week.

Emily Bobel, 15, a sophomore at Palo Alto High School placed fourth at the Pacific Coast Championships in novice figures. In this event, skaters trace a pattern on the ice and are judged for accuracy and technical merit.

Her fourth place finish has won Emily a place at Nationals, to be held in Nashville, Tenn., during the second week of February.

Emily, Leo and Ashley, along with Ariel Hoffman, a senior at Palo Alto High School who competed in the junior ladies figures event in Utah, and Tiffany Chan, a promising senior ladies singles competitor from Redwood City, will all be appearing at a "Best of the Bay Area" ice skating exhibition at the San Jose Ice Center, 1500 S. 10th St. in San Jose on Thursday, Dec. 19. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $3 and will be available at the door.
