A free community symposium and health fair, featuring many of the leading health care policy experts and service providers in the Palo Alto area, will be held this Saturday, Feb. 5 at Palo Alto High School.
While pre-registration by phone (326-8210) is encouraged to assist in workshop room assignments, community members may attend any part of the day without registering in advance.
The symposium features two morning panel discussions, a health fair and 19 afternoon workshops on a wide variety of health topics. A video history of health care in the Palo Alto area, specially produced for the symposium and courtesy of Stanford University Hospital, will begin the day.
In the first morning panel, Stanford President Emeritus Don Kennedy will facilitate a discussion titled, "The Reality of Health Care Reform: What it means to you and the Palo Alto area." Kennedy and a group of local health policy experts and doctors with different perspectives on health reform will discuss how they think reform will impact this area.
The second half of the morning will be devoted to a dialogue on adolescent health issues. A panel titled, "Is Anyone Listening? What Palo Alto teens want us to hear about health issues of concern to them," will be moderated by Irv Rollins, director of Educational Support Services for the Palo Alto Unified School District and will include high school students and adolescent health experts.
Local non-profit health organizations will put on a health fair from 11:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., organized by the Stanford Blood Center.
The afternoon offers the public the chance to attend any two of 19 workshops led by many well-known doctors and health educators. The Mid-Peninsula YMCA will coordinate the closing session at 3 p.m.
The symposium is the first of three to be held during 1994 sponsored by the Palo Alto Weekly as part of the celebration of Palo Alto's Centennial. Co-sponsors include Stanford University Hospital, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Stanford Blood Center, Children's Health Council, Mid-Peninsula YMCA and Cable Co-op.
