Lawrence Stagner has been sentenced to another year in prison. Stagner, 32, was convicted of the attempted kidnapping of a Menlo Park woman in 1990 and had escaped from a Sacramento halfway house in December prior to his scheduled prison release next year. He was captured without incident in Truckee. Stagner attempted to kidnap a former high school classmate, Kathleen Gallagher, after stalking her, but she escaped and he was subsequently sentenced to eight years in prison. After his conviction, the state Legislature passed an anti-stalking law in 1992.

A Menlo Park police officer exchanged shots with a man he was chasing at 4:20 a.m. March 6 in Belle Haven. No one was injured in the incident, and the man eluded a police search. Officer Brandt Krueger attempted to question a man near the Onetta Harris Community Center, but the man turned and ran. In the ensuing chase, the man turned and fired one shot at Krueger, who fired two shots at the man. A search of the neighborhood failed to locate the man. He was described as white, 25 years old, 5 feet 8 inches, medium build with long blond hair, and wearing a green fatigue jacket and dark pants.
