IN MEMORIUM . . . A memorial service for Jack Perritt, who coached the Palo Alto Knights Pop Warner Mighty Mites the past five years, will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Alta Mesa Chapel in Palo Alto. Perritt passed away last Saturday due to complications with a blood clot. "Aside from his considerable love for kids and loyal commitment to the Palo Alto Knights, Jack was among the finest men to ever coach for the Knights," Palo Alto Pop Warner President Mike Piha said. "His integrity was beyond question, his commitment unsurpassed. He was an outstanding teacher and mentor to many children in our community." . . . A memorial gathering is planned for friends and colleagues of Hugh McWilliams, teacher and former football coach at Palo Alto High from 1956-60. The gathering will be today at 3 p.m. in the south end zone of Hod Ray Field at the school.

SWIMMING CHAMPS . . . Former Stanford swimming stars Peter Marshall, Randall Bal and Tara Kirk are making a big splash at the World Cup short course meet in Stockholm this week. Marshall won the 100 back in 51.07, just ahead of Bal, who swam a 51.52 to finish second. Marshall also placed sixth in the 50 fly in 23.97. Kirk won the 100 breast in 1:05.53 and then came back to win the 50 breast in 30.37.

MELBOURNE MEMO . . . Two-time NCAA singles champion Laura Granville defeated Bulgarian Tszvetana Pironkova, 7-5, 6-2, in the second of the Australian Open on Wednesday. Pironkova upset top-seeded Venus Williams in the first round. The 57th-ranked Granville, who starred at Stanford, was scheduled to meet Virginia Ruano Pascual in Thursday's third-round action. Granville is seeking to advance to the fourth round of a Grand Slam event for just the second time in her career. Former Menlo School star Dmitry Tursunov lost his second-round match to 16th seeded Tommy Robredo, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3, on Wednesday.

SOCCER TRYOUTS . . . The Palo Alto Soccer Club is holding open tryouts on Saturdays running through Feb. 12 for Class 1 and Class 3 boys and girls U-10 and U-14 at the Cubberley Community Center fields.
