Stanford sophomore women's tennis player Celia Durkin won the singles title at the Freeman Memorial Championships at UNLV on Sunday. Durkin exacted a measure of revenge in beating UCLA's Laura Gordon, 6-2, 6-0, in the title match.
Gordon knocked off Stanford's Alice Barnes in the quarterfinals and Teresa Logar in the semifinals to reach the championship. The unranked and unseeded Durkin beat UNLV's Elena Gantcheva, fighting off a match point to force a third-set tiebreaker and win 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), en route to the championship match.
Gordon was also unseeded in the tournament, though she is ranked 94th in the nation. Barnes was seeded third and Logar was seeded fifth. Anne Yelsey, the top seed, was one of the five seeded players who lost on the first day.
Barnes and Yelsey did combine to win the doubles title with a 9-7 victory over Arizona State's Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke.
Sophomore Whitney Deason reached the championship match of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Indian Wells on Sunday, but lost to USC's Dianne Matias, 6-0, 7-5.
Deason did upset the top-seeded Diana Srebrovic, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), in the second round.
Men's tennis
Freshman Matt Bruch defeated Stanford teammate and Menlo School grad James Pade, 6-4, 6-3, on Sunday in the semifinals of the Sherwood Collegiate Cup at the Sherwood Country Club in Westlake Village.
Bruch, ranked fourth in the nation, was scheduled to meet Baylor's Matija Agaga in Monday's championship match.
Pade, a redshirt junior, won three matches before falling to Bruch.
Bruch, who improved to 15-2 in singles play, is also Pade's doubles' partner and the duo reached the semifinals, also scheduled for Monday. The Cardinal doubles team of Chris Rasmussen and James Wan also advanced to the semifinals.
