SHP boys keep hoop streak alive SHP boys keep hoop streak alive (January 06, 2006)

Gators are now 65-0 in the PSAL since January of 2002

by Keith Peters

The last time the Sacred Heart Prep boys' basketball team suffered a loss in the Private Schools Athletic League, the team's current seniors were in the eighth grade.

It was January 4 in 2002 when Sacred Heart Prep fell to Fremont Christian. Since then, the Gators haven't lost. That streak is now 65 straight, following SHP's 72-30 romp over host King's Academy on Tuesday night in Sunnyvale.

Senior guard Pat Coffey, who has been starting since his freshman year, has yet to lose a league game during his career. That streak is now 51 straight - three consecutive 16-0 seasons plus the Gators' 3-0 start this season.

During Coffey's time on varsity, Sacred Heart Prep is 77-18 overall.

Coffey helped keep the streak alive with 18 points Tuesday night. He nailed four three-pointers. Fellow senior Eric Cowell, in his third season on varsity, led the way with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

In other PSAL games:

Woodside Priory senior forward Hap Plain scored 22 points, the final three coming with three seconds left to tie the game. Host Fremont Christian, however, scored with two seconds remaining to pull out a 39-37 victory. Priory fell to 0-2 in league (4-4 overall).

Pinewood (0-1, 5-4) opened league play with a 55-46 overtime loss at St. Lawrence in Santa Clara. Junior Tyler Mosher led the Panthers with 14 points, including four three-pointers, while junior Michel Nofal added 12 and junior Nick Fraioli scored 11.

In the SCVAL De Anza Division, Gunn junior Peter Jordan bounced back from missing a game Saturday due to the flu to register 29 points as the Titans rolled to a 69-58 league-opening triumph over host Mountain View on Wednesday.

Gunn (1-0, 10-5) also got a season-high 18 points from senior guard Nicky La Fleur.

The Titans found themselves down by one at the half, but thoroughly dominated the third period and built their lead to 18 early in the fourth.

"We hit a tough part in the second period," said Gunn coach Chris Redfield. "The second half went better for us and Nicky La Fleur played great."

Gunn will host Milpitas tonight at 7:45 p.m.

In nonleague action Wednesday, Menlo-Atherton (9-5) had three players score in double figures and had 13 players register points in a 79-50 romp at San Mateo.

Freshman Peter DeFilipps led the Bears with 14 points while senior Tyronn Pettis added 12 and 6-6 senior Spencer Montgomery chipped in with 10.

The Bears will conclude their preseason schedule tonight by hosting Aragon at 7:45 p.m.

Boys soccer

Gunn (1-1, 5-3-3) was shocked by Mountain View, 1-0, in a De Anza Division match at De Anza College on Tuesday.

"We start out well and then we get into a rut," said a frustrated Gunn coach David Burgee. "Our team is just not playing well as a group."

Palo Alto's scheduled home match with Cupertino on Tuesday was cancelled due to wet grounds. The Vikings (1-0-1, 2-4-2) will visit Woodside today at 5:30 p.m.

In the PAL Bay Division, Menlo (0-4, 3-7) will host Westmoor today at 3 p.m.

Girls soccer

Woodside Priory (1-0, 5-0) opened its West Bay Athletic League season with a 5-3 win over host Harker on Tuesday.

Sarah Montgomery made her varsity debut for the Panthers and scored one goal in addition to assisting on three others. Zoe Ciuputu scored twice while Courtney Lee and Cami Simpson added the other goals.

The Panthers will host Castilleja today at 3:30 p.m.

In the SCVAL De Anza Division, Gunn (0-2, 1-7-1) was beaten by host Mountain View, 4-1.

Palo Alto (1-1, 2-4-1) will visit Los Gatos on Saturday at 10 a.m., while Sacred Heart Prep plays host to St. Francis in a West Catholic Athletic League match at 11 a.m.
