OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Palo Alto's Abby Duckett has been named Pacific Swimmer of the Year in addition to "2004-05 Pacific 10/Under girl Swimmer of the Year" for both the long- and short-course seasons. More than 14,000 swimmers make up the Pacific Swimming association. One of Duckett's coaches at Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics (PASA), Jennifer (Davis) Doughty, gave birth for the first time last week. Doughty is the daughter of former Palo Alto High swim coach Ro Davis, now an athletic director in Hawaii . . . The Gunn High boys' soccer team got two goals from senior Russell Wynne, but the Titans dropped a 3-2 decision to Santa Barbara during pool play in the West Coast Classic tournament in Irvine this week . . . Former Palo Alto High football coach Hugh McWilliams passed away on Dec. 6 at the age of 87. McWilliams was head coach at Paly in the 1950s. In 1956, the Vikings put together an undefeated season. He later was a backfield coach at the U.S. Naval Academy in the 1960s and helped develop two Heisman Trophy winners - Joe Bellino and Roger Staubach. An informal memorial service at Paly's Hod Ray Field is planned for early January.

COACHING CORNER . . . Gunn High is looking for a throws coach for the 2006 track and field season. Interested coaches should contract Gunn Athletic Director Matt McGinn at 354-8290 . . . Pinewood is looking for a softball coach for the spring season, in addition to a boys and girls swimming coach, plus a junior high girls' basketball coach.
