OAKS' CORNER . . . The Menlo College men's basketball team defeated visiting Simpson, 89-67, in Cal Pac Conference action on Saturday night. Damian Carter scored 15 points for the Oaks, who are off to their best start in seven years. Zack Peck, making his first start of the year, added 12 points. The Oaks weren't so lucky on Sunday, dropping a 78-77 decision in double overtime to host Dominican College in San Rafael. The Penguins rallied from three-point deficits in each overtime period. Menlo made 11 of 22 shots from long range and outrebounded Dominican, 41-32, but also turned the ball over 25 times. Menlo (1-2, 5-3) was slated to meet College of Mount St. Joseph's on Wednesday on the final night of Bahamas Sunshine Shootout in Nassau. The Oaks rank first among NAIA Division II team in total rebound defense (26.0) and fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (.427) . . . The Menlo College women's basketball team downed visiting Simpson, 69-29, in a Cal Pac contest on Saturday. Kepua Lee scored a game-high 15 points for the Oaks (2-1, 6-3). Menlo suffered its first conference loss to host Dominican, 47-42, on Sunday. A late turnover proved costly for the Oaks . . . The Menlo College men's wrestling team dropped a 33-11 decision to visiting Southern Oregon on Friday. Senior 133-pounder Pablo Sanchez, ranked sixth nationally, won his match by a major decision while senior heavyweight Ben Flores made his season debut a successful one.


OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Palo Alto Lightning Track Club member Kieran Gallagher finished 29th overall in a field of 211 Bantam Division runners at the Junior Olympics National Cross Country Championships, held in deep snow conditions recently in Providence, R.I.


COACHING CORNER . . . Pinewood is looking for a softball coach for the spring season, in addition to a boys and girls swimming coach, plus a junior high girls' basketball coach.
