RUNNING AROUND . . . Whatever the weather is like in Providence, R.I. in December, it won't matter to 10-year-old Kieran Gallagher, who will be running in the National Junior Olympics cross country race, in the bantam girls division, there a week from Saturday. Gallagher, who represents the Palo Alto-based Lightning Track Club, qualified for the nationals by finishing second at the Region 14 JO competition at Woodward Park in Fresno last Sunday. She completed the 3,000 meter course -- in 30-degree weather -- in 12:20, among the top 40 times in the nation. "Kieran has been very competitive this cross country season," Lightning coach Willie Young said. "She is a very tough 10-year-old. The top 25 finishers (at the nationals) will earn All American awards and we feel Kieran will be in that group."


OAKS' CORNER . . . Senior Damian Carter scored 20 points as the Menlo College men's basketball team defeated visiting UC Santa Cruz, 75-60, in a nonconference contest on Tuesday night. Zack Peck and Bryon Wesley each scored 11 for the Oaks (2-1), who opened the second half with a 15-5 run that gave them some breathing room. Menlo hosts San Francisco State on Monday night at 7:30 p.m. . . . The Menlo College women's soccer team, which won its first Cal Pac title, had four players named first team all-conference and four picked to the second team. Gunn High grad Ja'Net Lawrence was a first team selection as well as being chosen for NAIA Region II honors. The senior forward led the Oaks withg seven assists and was second with 19 points. Joining Lawrence on the first team are junior defender Molly Flanagan, senior defender Jonel Thomas and sophomore midfielder Sheryl Cumine. Junior forward Rachel Anden, midfielders Ryanne Bergstrom and Katie Gravett and defender Kerry Gaiz were second team picks . . . The Menlo College men's soccer program had four players named to the All-California Pacific Conference team. Aidan O'Flynn and Hal Eckensweiler were named to the first team, while freshman Gary Hodgson and senior forward Armando San Vincente were second-team picks.


COACHING CORNER . . . Palo Alto's new baseball coach, Joel Kaufman, is looking for assistant coaches for both the varsity and JV teams in addition to a head JV coach.
