MAKING THE HALL . . . When former Stanford tennis great John McEnroe was enshrined into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame last year, his college coach was on hand to help him celebrate. This year, former Stanford tennis coach Dick Gould will be joining McEnroe in the BASHOF. Gould and former Stanford track coach Payton Jordan join former Warriors' forward Chris Mullin and former Raiders' linebacker Ted Hendricks as the four-member class of 2006 will be officially inducted at a dinner on April 4 at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. Gould, who retired from coaching in 2004 but remains active as Stanford's Director of Tennis, recorded a 776-148 career mark in 38 years, 17 of which ended with the Cardinal winning a national title. Jordan coached track at Stanford for 23 years, retiring in 1979. He also coached the 1968 U.S. Olympic track team which won more medals than any other team in American history. He also set age-group world records in the 100 meters on the Masters level. Stanford hosts the Payton Jordan U.S. Open, a Grand Prix meet, every year.
POP WARNER ROUNDUP . . . While the Palo Alto Knights Pop Warner Junior Midgets prepare to meet the San Francisco Bombers on Sunday with a berth to the Pop Warner Super Bowl at stake, the Knights Pee Wee's went about capturing the Pacific Northwest Frank Guida Memorial Championship with a 44-12 victory over the San Francisco Junior 49ers last weekend at Woodside High. Cameron Moody scored three touchdowns for the Pee Wees, who finish their season with a 10-2 mark. Jamari Beverly scored twice and Christoph Bono also scored. The Palo Alto defense caused six turnovers and was led by Tywaun Livingston, Mosa Likio, Kevin Proceviant, Jackie Evans, Austin Braff, Kevin Kannappan, Bryan Keohane, Jordan Piha and Bono. Meanwhile the Junior Knights (9-1) meet the Bombers at Townsend Field in Santa Clara on Sunday at 1 p.m. The winner advances to the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
HONORED OAK . . . Menlo College sophomore guard Kepua Lee was named California Pacific Conference Player of the Week for her efforts in leading the Oaks' women's basketball team to a pair of season-opening victories. Lee, last year's Cal Pac Freshman of the Year, scored 16 points and seven assists in Menlo's 75-56 victory over La Verne, and then scored 12 points in a 90-45 victory at Pomona-Pitzer. Menlo (2-0) hosts Evergreen College on Saturday at 7 p.m. in its home opener.
