The Menlo College men's wrestling team hosts West Valley College in its first dual meet of the season today at 7:30 p.m.

The Oaks opened their season last weekend at the Menlo College Open, in which six Oaks claimed first place in their respective divisions. Senior Pablo Sanchez, eighth-ranked at 133 pounds, led the way with his win in Pool A.

Freshman Tyrell Blanche, ranked third nationally at 197 pounds, won Pool C.

Other winners included sophomore John Hayworth (157), senior Jesse Vasquez (184), junior heavyweight Trevir Blackwelder, and freshman Robert Davis at 157 pounds.

"The guys wrestled well. We made some mistakes, which is to be expected early in the year but I think we showed great potential," Menlo coach Keith Spataro said. "As the year progresses, we should be a formidable team."

Junior Sara Fulp-Allen (105.5 pounds) finished fifth while sophomore Jade Perry (138.5) finished sixth to highlight the Menlo women's wrestling team's performance in the Clansmen International over the weekend at Simon Fraser University.

The Oaks are back on the road Sunday at the Mike Clock Open at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore.

Menlo travels to Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont today at 7 p.m. for its final match of the regular season, with the California Pacific Conference title on the line.

The Oaks (12-1, 16-6) entered play on Thursday night at Dominican with a one game lead on the rest of the conference.

Notre Dame de Namur finished second to the Oaks last season and Dominican was third. Menlo swept both schools in three games earlier in the season.

The conference champion receives an automatic bid into the NAIA Division II playoffs.
