COLLEGE CORNER . . . Gunn High grad Jennifer Wang of Swarthmore College (Pa.) has been named to the 2005 All-Centennial Conference volleyball team. Wang, a freshman outside hitter, was an honorable mention choice. She made an immediate impact on the Swarthmore team with 42 kills, 58 digs and 11 service aces in her first collegiate tournament - earning all-tournament honors at the Greyhound Invitational in September. For her efforts, she was named Centennial Conference Player of the Week. She had a team-high 14 double-doubles during the season while ranking sixth in the conference in total digs and seventh in kills. She held Swarthmore earn its first Centennial playoff bid in school history after finishing 6-4 in league.


OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Menlo Park resident Amir Bashti will compete in the boys' 8-9 division at the 2005 Sierra Mist MLS Dribble, Pass & Score youth skills competition Saturday in Frisco, Texas, a day before the MLS Cup 2005. Bashti advanced through three previous levels of competition to reach the national finals that feature 24 participants in three age divisions . . . The Palo Alto Pop Warner Football Pee Wee team (8-1) will meet Oak Grove on Saturday in the Peninsula Conference championships at Woodside High at 2 p.m. Following that game, the Palo Alto Jr. Midgets (8-1) will play Oak Grove for that division title at 4 p.m. The winners advance to the Northwest Regional Championships the following weekend.


FUNDRAISER . . . The Stanford women's gymnastics program will host its annual "Sips & Swings" fund-raising event on Saturday at Zibibbo Restaurant, 450 Kipling St., in Palo Alto. The event, which begins at 2 p.m., offers food and wine, wine-tasting seminars and a chance to bid on auction items. All proceeds benefit the Stanford women's gymnastics program.
