Menlo College volleyball close to title

The Menlo College women's volleyball team moved a step closer to defending its California Pacific Conference title with a pair of home victories over the weekend.
The Oaks (12-1, 16-6) beat William Jessup, 27-30, 30-14, 30-19, 30-13, on Friday night and then beat Simpson, 30-9, 30-13, 30-15, on Saturday night.
Menlo holds a one-game lead in the conference standings entering the final weekend of play. Menlo travels to Dominican College on Thursday night.
Freshman Malia Pires recorded 20 kills in the victory over William Jessup and 16 kills in the win over Simpson.
Junior Sanoe' Eselu added 19 and 14 kills, respectively, as the Oaks extended their win streak to four matches, and 15 of 18 overall.
Senior Kari Shimomura accounted for a season-high 43 assists as Menlo overcame a sluggish first game against William Jessup. Sophomore Christa Hewett, who had 29 digs, sparked the Oaks with five service aces during a 16-5 run in the second game.
Eselu added 19 digs and sophomore Krista Catian had 18. Senior Gloria Magana had 11 kills.
Shimomura, Menlo's all-time digs leader, and Magana played their final regular season home match on Saturday.
Football
Menlo (0-9) travels to Colorado College on Saturday for its final chance to end a 14-game losing streak.
Adam Hazel threw for 304 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Eddie Eyo caught nine passes for 147 yards but it wasn't enough as the Oaks dropped 48-24 decision to host Pacific Lutheran last Saturday.
Brandon Gresham gave the Oaks a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter with a 26-yard field goal but the Lutes scored the next 27 points to gain control of the game.
Eyo caught a 44-yard touchdown pass and Kevin Estes caught a 55-yard scoring toss from Hazel. Drew Faria also scored for the Oaks.
Pacific Lutheran rolled up 632 total yards, 21 shy of its school record.
Menlo's last victory came Oct. 2, 2004 against Whittier. The Oaks are 1-16 over their past 17 games after posting a 7-3 record in 2003.
Men's golf
Freshman Ryan Hayes shot a 9-over-par 81 and Menlo finished fourth at the Dominican Tournament on the San Geronimo Golf Course last week.
Wrestling
Menlo hosts West Valley College in a men's dual meet on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The women's team is scheduled to compete at the Mike Clock Open in Forest Grove, Ore. on Sunday.
