FOUR AUTHORS ... The Community Association for Rehabilitation is holding its 14th annual authors' luncheon fundraiser on Saturday Nov. 5 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Palo Alto. The featured authors are Anne Lamott ("Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith"), Adam Hochschild ("Bury the Chains: Prophets and Rebels in the Fight to Free an Empire's Slaves"), Elizabeth Partridge ("John Lennon: All I Want is the Truth") and Lisa See ("Snow Flower and the Secret Fan"). The book salon opens at 10:30 a.m. and the ballroom opens for luncheon seating at 11:30 a.m. Book sales are at 2 p.m. after the luncheon. Tickets are $85 and may be obtained by calling (650) 618-3328 or by emailing chris@c-a-r.org.
OF LOCAL NOTE ... A local author who is gaining some note is Bill Wyman a former Stanford University administrator. His book, "High Country," is a novel of the Sierra Nevada compared to those of Larry McMurtry by Tom Haydon, former longtime owner of Wessex Books in Menlo Park.
POLITICS AND KIDS ...Bell's Books, 536 Emerson in Palo Alto, will celebrate the election this month by exhibiting finely bound rare books from the library of California's sixth governor, Milton S. Latham. The books will be on display Nov. 2-9. In addition, Bell's will have a display of award-winning children's books to celebrate Children's Book Week Nov. 11-19. Children's books will be 20 percent off.
RETURN OF A FRIEND ... Kepler's Books in Menlo Park, newly reopened, will host am autumn literary festival on Nov. 3. Jerome Karabel (The Chosen," a book about college admissions) will be at the store at 5:30 p.m. Tobias Wolff of Stanford ("Old School") will be at the store at 7:30 p.m. Novelist Barry Eisler will be at the Menlo Park City Council Chambers at 7:30 p.m. Ann Packer ("The Dive from Clausen's Pier") will be Trellis Restaurant, Menlo Park, at 7:30 p.m. All are free admission.
