OAKS' CORNER . . . The past week must have been interesting for Menlo women's soccer player Molly Flanagan. The junior defender was named California Pacific Conference Player of the Week after helping the Oaks win twice in conference play. Then she assisted on Menlo's only goal during Tuesday's frustrating, double-overtime loss to visiting Notre Dame de Namur. She scored six goals and recorded her first multi-goal match of the season last week. Katie Gravett scored on Flanagan's assist to give Menlo a 1-0 in the 51st minute against the Argonauts. Notre Dame rallied to tie the match in the 65th minute and won it in the 112th minute. The Oaks (3-0 in the CalPac, 8-4-1 overall) travel to Bethany on Tuesday for a 1 p.m. match . . . When the Menlo College football team went to Pella, Iowa to play Central College, under freezing conditions, in its last postseason appearance in 1987, lineman Frank Morones was one of the reasons the Oaks were able to make the trip. He was one of the original players when Menlo converted its athletic program to NCAA Division III status from junior college status. Morones, along with former baseball standout Dominic Ascani, was inducted into the Menlo College Hall of Fame last week. Morones' teams were 28-9-2 during his four years at the school, two at the Division III level. Morones was also a three-year starter at catcher for the Menlo baseball team. Ascani batted .300 both years he played at Menlo and earned all-Coast Conference honors. He went on to play for San Jose State. Ascani also played for the 1960-61 Menlo basketball team that captured the Coast Conference championship . . . Junior outside hitter Sanoe' Eselu had a match-high 15 kills to go with 17 digs as the Menlo College women's volleyball team defeated visiting UC Santa Cruz, 30-21, 31-29, 30-24, on Tuesday. The Oaks play at Pacific Union on Sunday . . . The Menlo men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to visiting Notre Dame de Namur on Tuesday. Scott Gill and Balta Vazquez scored for the Oaks (7-5-1), who play at Pacific Union today . . . Junior Jarin Beck shot an 11-over-par 153 to lead the Menlo College men's golf team to an eighth-place finish at the Holy Names University Fall Invitational Monday at the Monarch Bay Golf Club.
OF LOCAL NOTE . . . The Stanford Water Polo Club boys' 14-under team qualified for the annual Speedo Cup, which brings together the top age-group teams in the nation, by beating Lamorinda last weekend, 5-3, at UC Santa Cruz. Stanford, which took second in the Speedo Cup last year, was the top seed in the qualifying tournament. Lamorinda had beaten Stanford at the National Junior Olympics this summer on the way to finishing second overall. Stanford grabbed the bronze medal at the Junior Olympics.
