Menlo football, women's volleyball headed in different directions Menlo football, women's volleyball headed in different directions (October 05, 2005)

by Rick Eymer

Playing up a few levels, the Menlo College football team can probably explain the difference between a Division III team and a Division I-AA team after dropping a 56-0 decision to visiting University of San Diego on Saturday at San Jose City College.

Not only are the Toreros an accomplished program with athletic scholarships to offer, they are one of the better teams at their level as their 4-1 mark would attest.

Oh yeah, San Diego is also coached by former NFL quarterback and Palo Alto High grad Jim Harbaugh.

Menlo (0-5) hopes to rebound when Cal Lutheran visits on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the Oaks' homecoming.

Receiver Eddie Eyo caught six passes for 85 yards as Menlo was shut out for just the second time in 57 games.

The Oaks were inside San Diego's 30-yard line four times, but failed on two field goals, including one of 20 yards.

The Toreros scored on their first seven possessions, taking the lead less than two minutes into the game. They led 28-0 after the first quarter.

Menlo's best scoring chance came late in the first quarter. Rashod Edwards returned a kickoff 60 yards to the San Diego 27-yard line.

Dustin Guglielmelli completed a 17-yard pass to Kevin Lyle and the Oaks reached the Toreros 3-yard line before stalling. Brendan Gresham's field goal sailed wide right from 20 yards out.

Women's volleyball

Menlo remained unbeaten in California Pacific Conference play following road wins over William Jessup, 30-14, 30-17, 30-18, on Friday and swept Simpson on Saturday.

The Oaks (6-0, 7-5) host Dominican on Friday at 7 p.m. The Penguins were one of the top team in the Cal Pac last season.

Against William Jessup, freshman outside hitter Malia Pires had 10 kills, junior setter Sara Bungarz had 20 assists and sophomore libero Christa Hewett recorded 13 digs. Senior Kari Shimomura added 11 digs and eight kills.

Men's soccer

Menlo sophomore goalkeeper Pat Conte recorded eight saves and the Oaks opened California Pacific Conference play with a scoreless tie with visiting Dominican in double overtime on Saturday.

The Oaks, unbeaten in their last four matches, received a team-high three shots from freshman forward Gary Hodgson.

Menlo (0-0-1, 6-3-1) hosts Holy Names on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Women's soccer

Gunn grad Ja'Net Lawrence recorded two assists and Menlo opened California Pacific Conference play with a 5-1 victory over visiting Dominican on Saturday.

Katie Gravett scored twice and Rachel Anden also had two assists as the Oaks won for the third time in four matches.

Anden opened the scoring for the Oaks in the fourth minute, taking a feed from Lawrence and shooting past Dominican goalkeeper Autumn Koshell.

Gravett scored four minutes later, with an assist from Anden, and Menlo was in control the rest of the way.

Gravett added her second goal in the 24th minute. Ryanne Bergstrom and Katie Renteria also scored for the Oaks, who host Holy Names on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
