OAKS CORNER . . . The Menlo College football team dropped its third straight game on Saturday, falling to host Whittier, 27-19. The Oaks rallied with 19 unanswered points to close within 21-19 in the fourth quarter, but could never overcome the early deficit. Sophomore running back Eddie Connor rushed for two touchdowns and quarterback Dustin Guglielmelli completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Eyo, who caught a career high eight passes for 164 yards. Menlo travels to Willamette on Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. contest . . . A dramatic come-from-behind victory over host Holy Names on Friday night helped keep the Menlo College women's volleyball team undefeated in Cal Pac Conference play. The Oaks (3-0, 5-3) had an easier time of it on Saturday in a three-game sweep of visiting Mills College. Menlo lost its first two games and were down, 27-20, in game three against Holy Names. The Oaks rallied to win the third game, 38-36, which propelled them the rest of the way in the 23-30, 25-30, 36-38, 30-26, 15-10 win. "In my six years here, it was, without a doubt, the most exciting match I've been apart of," Menlo coach Bill Imwalle said. Senior outside hitter Kari Shimomura recorded a triple-double with 14 kills, 18 digs and 15 assists. Freshman outside hitter Malia Pires had 15 kills while sophomore libero Christa Hewett had 37 digs. Junior setter Sara Bungarz led the way in Menlo's 30-9, 30-4, 30-15 victory over Mills . . . The Menlo College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 home decision to The Master's College on Saturday. Katie Gravett, with an assist from Molly Flanagan, scored the Oaks' lone goal. Menlo (3-2-1) travels to Redding to meet Oregon Tech on Friday.
NOTEWORTHY . . . Stanford grad Nicole Powell is in the middle of a championship run with the Sacramento Monarchs of the WNBA. She tied a league record with four-pointers, accounting for her 12 points, in Sacramento' 66-55 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday to take a 2-1 lead in the championship finals. The two teams met Tuesday night at Arco Arena, with the Monarchs needing one win to claim their first league title. Former Stanford player Jamie Carey missed all three of her shot attempts for the Sun . . . Former Menlo School tennis standout Dmitry Tursunov reached the doubles final of the China Open in Beijing on Sunday before losing, with partner Mikhail Youzhny, to Justin Gimelstob and and Nathan Healey, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
NEW COACH . . . Former Palo Alto High baseball coach Pete Colombo has been named the new head baseball coach of the Palo Alto Oaks. Colombo, the athletic director at Jordan Middle School, resigned his post at Paly with two weeks remaining in the 2005 schedule due to health problems. Colombo replaces Steve Espinoza, who will concentrate on running the business side of the team as well as the annual Tony Makjavich Memorial golf tournament.

Palo Alto Babe Ruth is now conducting online registration for their Fall Baseball league, which is open to Babe Ruth age players (incoming 13-, 14- and 15-year olds) residing in Palo Alto Babe Ruth's local area.
