Stanford Savoyards
Since 1973, the Stanford Savoyards have presented the light operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as other shows, on campus at Stanford. The group puts on two musicals with orchestra per season. For more information, go to www.stanford.edu/group/savoyards.
"Mikado" by Gilbert and Sullivan has performances on Nov. 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 8 p.m. and on Nov. 20 at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are $15 general, $10 for seniors and $8 for students. Call the Stanford ticket office at (650) 725-ARTS.
West Bay Opera
Palo Alto's own opera company is in its 50th season this year, performing at the Lucie Stern Theatre at 1305 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto. For more information, call (650) 424-9999 or go to www.wbopera.org. Tickets may also be bought at the opera office at 221 Lambert Ave. in Palo Alto, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The first production of the season is "The Magic Flute" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, performed in German with English titles. It runs Oct. 14-16 and 21-23, 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.
Tickets are $75 on Oct. 14 and $50 on the other days. Youth tickets are half of the general price.
Giacomo Puccini's "Manon Lescaut" runs Feb. 18-19 and 24-26, telling the tale of a woman offered passionate love by one man and the lap of luxury by others.
"The Rake's Progress" by Igor Stravinsky runs May 27-28 and June 2-4. The Faustian fable depicts a man bargaining with a Mephisto-like character for a life of ease.
