JOINING RELIEF EFFORT . . . Stanford men's basketball coach Trent Johnson joined other coaches from across the nation to help raise funds for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. An online sports auction highlights the effort, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization that builds homes for low incomes families. A website, http://AllCoachesCare.com, has been created to provide more information on the auction and as a link for fans to bid. Johnson is offering four premium seats to the Stanford vs. Denver game on Dec. 19 and will take the winning bidder to breakfast the next morning. Bidding closes Friday, September 23.
NEW COACH . . . Former Palo Alto High baseball coach Pete Colombo has been named the new head baseball coach of the Palo Alto Oaks. Colombo, the athletic director at Jordan Middle School, resigned his post at Paly with two weeks remaining in the 2005 schedule due to health problems. Colombo replaces Steve Espinoza, who will concentrate on running the business side of the team as well as the annual Tony Makjavich Memorial golf tournament.
MENLO OAKS ROUNDUP . . . The Menlo College football team will be seeking its first win of the season when it plays at Whittier College on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Oaks (0-2) own a seven-game winning streak against the Poets (1-0) and are 13-3 against them overall. Palo Alto resident Dustin Guglielmelli and Joe Micco have shared quarterbacking duties this year. They have combined to throw for 438 yards and four touchdowns. Kevin Lyle is Menlo's leading receiver with nine catches for 200 yards. Menlo Park resident David French starts at defensive end for the Oaks . . . Menlo College freshman Lindsey Dunlap scored the only goal as the Oaks' women's soccer team downed host Cal State East Bay, 1-0, on Wednesday. Junior midfielder Katie Gravett had the assist for Menlo (3-1-1), which hosts The Master's College on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Palo Alto Babe Ruth is now conducting online registration for their Fall Baseball league, which is open to Babe Ruth age players (incoming 13-, 14- and 15-year olds) residing in Palo Alto Babe Ruth's local area.
