Gustavo Ramos Rivera

The brightly hued monoprints of Mexican-born artist Gustavo Ramos Rivera will be on view at Smith Andersen Editions through Sept. 29. The painter and printmaker works on paper and canvas and is known for his spirited abstract creations.

'The Expressive Landscape'

Colorful, dappled landscapes will take center stage at Viewpoints Gallery at 315 State St. in Los Altos through Oct. 2.

Redwood City painter Ed Terpening's solo art exhibition includes many scenes from the wilds of California. He says he has also found inspiration in the Virgin Islands, Paris and Provence.

Opera preview lectures

A classic thriller with arias by Handel: that's "Rodelinda," which will be presented by San Francisco Opera Sept. 17 through Oct. 8. Locally, opera-lovers can gear up for the show by attending a Sept. 13 preview lecture in Menlo Park given by Bruce Lamott.

The 7:30 p.m. preview lectures are led by musicologists and organized by the South Peninsula Opera Guild before every opera. They take place at Little House at 800 Middle Ave. and cost $8 for members and $10 for non-members.

Fraggle Jazz Orchestra

Direct from the Netherlands, the Fraggle Jazz Orchestra plays tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Cubberley multi-purpose room at 4000 Middlefield Road.

A second show is planned for 3 p.m. this Sunday at the Lucie Stern Ballroom at 1305 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto.

The concerts commemorate the 25th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Palo Alto and the Dutch city of Enschede. Suggested donations are $25 per person for tonight's show and $5 per person for the Sunday performance.

'Aida'

It played more than 1,800 performances on Broadway. Now it's racking up a few more stagings in Los Altos.

Bus Barn Stage Company's production of "Aida" has its opening night tonight at 8 p.m. at 97 Hillview Ave. The musical by Elton John and Tim Rice spins the yarn of a tangled love triangle in ancient Egypt.

Opening-night tickets are $32 and include champagne after the show. For the later performances, which run through Oct. 1, tickets range from $22 to $28. Call (650) 941-0551 or go to www.busbarn.org.

DANCE

'Una Noche en Andalucía'

Dancers showcasing the traditional style of flamenco puro will bring to life scenes from the Spanish province of Andalucía tonight at Stanford University's Dinkelspiel Auditorium.

Led by artistic director La Mónica and including guest artist La Tania, the performance is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 general and $24 for students and seniors. Call (650) 725-2787.
