WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY? . . . A nine-week course, "Choices for Sustainable Living," will be offered by the Northwest Earth Institute, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 8 to 9:30 p.m. in a private home in Palo Alto. The course examines personal values and habits about sustainable living through weekly discussions. Cost is $17, which covers the workbook that is discussed each week. A PIECE OF HISTORY . . . Fine art originally purchased from Thomas Welton Stanford, brother of Leland Stanford, and displayed at Hyatt Rickey's since the 1940s, will be auctioned off this weekend, Sept. 10-11, beginning at 10 a.m. The auction, which will include more than 50 paintings and marble statues from Rickey's, as well as paintings once owned by the Churchill family and a sterling silver pitcher once owned by President Grover Cleveland, will be held at the Clars Auction Gallery, 5644 Telegraph Ave., Oakland. LOOKING FOR IDEAS? . . . The 24th annual South Bay Fall Home and Garden Show will be held Sept. 9, noon to 9 p.m., Sept. 10, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sept. 11, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Santa Clara Convention Center, 5001 Great America Parkway, Santa Clara. BUILD A SUKKAH . . . Home Depot is offering a clinic on "How to Build a Sukkah" on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m. Conducted in an informal setting near the garden department, the class will focus on how to construct the temporary structure -- two and a half walls and a top -- traditional for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, which begins Oct. 17 through Oct. 24. During the holiday, it is traditional to enjoy meals in the Sukkah, which is decorated with fruits and vegetables. For information, call (650) 462-6800.
