CARDINAL CORNER . . . Stanford grad and Sacramento Monarch guard Nicole Powell was voted the WNBA Most Improved Player of the Year on Friday. Powell, Charlotte's third pick in the 2004 draft, averaged 10.7 points and 3.6 rebounds while shooting .415 from 3-point range and .806 from the foul line. She led the league with 66 3-pointers . . . Stanford was also a presence in the men's doubles tournament at the U.S. Open Flushing Meadow, New York as Stanford products - Bob is a two-time NCAA singles champion and the twins also won an NCAA doubles championship -- Mike Bryan and Bob Bryan, defeated Stanford grads Paul Goldstein and Jim Thomas, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, in Thursday's semifinals to reach today's final. Goldstein was a teammate of the Bryans when Stanford won national team titles in 1997 and 1998. Also, Stanford freshman Matt Bruch advanced to the third round of the boys' singles tournament with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Rupesh Roy.
OAKS' CORNER . . . The defending Cal Pac Conference champion Menlo College women's volleyball team began its title defense with a 30-15, 30-20, 30-19 victory over visiting Pacific Union College on Tuesday. Senior Kari Shimomura led the Oaks (1-0, 3-3) with 15 kills while junior Sara Bungarz recorded 24 assists. Sophomore Christa Hewett had 15 digs. Menlo's match with Cal State Maritime was cancelled as the Keelhauers cancelled their volleyball season. The Oaks are back in action at Holy Names next Friday.
COACHING CORNER . . . Woodside Priory is looking for a girls' varsity basketball coach, boys' junior varsity basketball coach and a varsity swim coach. Palo Alto Babe Ruth is now conducting online registration for their Fall Baseball league, which is open to Babe Ruth age players (incoming 13-, 14- and 15-year olds) residing in Palo Alto Babe Ruth's local area.
