TEEING UP FOR RELIEF . . . The Stanford Golf Course will be open to the public on Monday, Sept. 19 with all proceeds (green fees are $100 per player and carts are renting for $12.50) going to the American Red Cross for the Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort. It's the first time since 1929 that the course is available to the public. Reservations can be made by calling the Stanford Golf Course at (650) 323-0944.
THIS AND THAT . . . Stanford grads Paul Goldstein and Jim Thomas reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open doubles tournament with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 victory over Lars Burgsmiller and Mikhail Youzhng on Sunday. They were joined in the quarterfinals by former Stanford standouts Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, who defeated Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu on Monday, 6-3, 6-1, to advance. Former Menlo School star Dmitry Tursunov lost his second-round singles match in the U.S. Open to Gonzalez, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. On the women's side, former Stanford star Laura Granville lost in the third round to Nadia Petrova, 6-2, 7-5 . . . The Cleveland Indians recalled Stanford grads Jeremy Guthrie and Ryan Garko to the majors. Garko will be making his major league debut. The Philadelphia Phillies called up Stanford grad A.J. Hinch . . . Menlo-Atherton High and Stanford grad Greg Camarillo made it to the final cuts before being let go by San Diego as NFL teams reduced their final roster to 53. The Chargers aren't done with him yet though, signing Camarillo to the eight-man practice squad on Sunday. Stanford grad Scott Scharff was cut by the San Francisco 49ers and former Stanford two-sport star Teyo Johnson was let go by the Oakland Raiders. Other Stanford grads who were among the final cuts over the weekend were Leigh Torrence by Green Bay, and Jon Ritchie by Philadelphia.

OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Palo Alto Babe Ruth is now conducting online registration for their Fall Baseball league, which is open to Babe Ruth age players (incoming 13-, 14- and 15-year olds) residing in Palo Alto Babe Ruth's local area. The Palo Alto Oaks' semipro baseball team will host the annual Tony Makjavich Memorial Golf Tournament on Sept. 10 at Moffett Field Golf Course in honor of their legendary former coach. The tournament begins with a 2 p.m. shotgun start and costs $125 per person, including greens fees, a cart, prizes and a steak dinner.
