DIGGING THE SCENE . . . If her collegiate debut is any indication, Palo Alto High grad Katrina Zawojski may be headed for a sparkling career with the Colgate women's volleyball team. Zawojski, who led the Vikings to their first ever SCVAL El Camino Division title last year, recorded a double-double with a team-high 16 kills and a team-best 18 digs in Colgate's 30-24, 30-14,30-25 loss to visiting Binghamton University at Cotterel Court in Hamilton, N.Y. on Saturday in the season opener for both teams. Zawojski is one of six freshmen who will try to help reverse the Raiders' recent misfortunes. Colgate won just five of 24 matches last year and hopes to end a five-match losing streak dating to last year on Saturday when the Raiders travel to Buffalo for the Western New York tournament. Colgate meets Niagara, Buffalo and Canisius in the two-day event . . . Menlo School grad Courtney Rose returns to Emory University for her junior year. Rose, a Palo Alto native, was a second team All-American selection with the Eagles last year. Emory, ranked fifth in the preseason Division III poll, opens its season Saturday against Lee University and the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, Ga. . . . Stanford grad Gabe Gardner helped the United States men's volleyball team clinch a spot in next year's World Championships in Japan with a 25-22, 25-12, 25-21 victory over host Puerto Rico on Saturday in the gold medal match of the NORCECA Zone qualifying tournament. American Riley Salmon was named tournament MVP as the U.S. won all four of its matches.


COACHING CORNER . . . Woodside Priory is looking for a girls' varsity basketball coach, boys' JV basketball coach and a varsity swim coach. OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Palo Alto Babe Ruth is now conducting online registration for their Fall Baseball league, which is open to Babe Ruth age players (incoming 13-, 14- and 15-year olds) residing in Palo Alto Babe Ruth's local area. The Palo Alto Oaks' semipro baseball team will host the annual Tony Makjavich Memorial Golf Tournament on Sept. 10 at Moffett Field Golf Course in honor of their legendary former coach. The tournament begins with a 2 p.m. shotgun start and costs $125 per person, including greens fees, a cart, prizes and a steak dinner. Leagues are accepting complete teams, and individuals can be placed on a free agent list. Palo Alto is also looking for coaches for the middle school athletics program. The Stanford Water Polo Club is accepting registrations for the fall session which runs between Sept. 6 and Oct. 30 and is designed for boys aged 14 and under. While there is no minimum age or skills requirement, athletes are expected to be able to swim 100 yards within two minutes. Deadline is Aug. 31.
