PREP ROUNDUP

Good starts in volleyball for SHP, M-A Good starts in volleyball for SHP, M-A (August 31, 2005)

Jason Trip may be in his first season as head coach of the Sacred Heart Prep girls' volleyball team, but that doesn't necessarily equate to lower expectations for his team this season.

The Gators, in fact, are off to a very good start following their season-opening performance at the Don Bosco Invitational at St. Francis Central Coast High last weekend.

The Gators went 6-0 in the two-day tournament, toppling Watsonville in two games to claim the championship.

Senior setter Sarah King led the Gators and was named Most Valuable Player. She'll be back on the court Thursday to lead her team against Mercy-Burlingame in the Gators' 2005 home opener. The varsity will follow the 5 p.m. JV match.

Menlo-Atherton, meanwhile, is off to a 2-1 start following its runnerup finish in the annual Burlingame Tournament last weekend.

The Bears (2-1) opened with a 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 25-22 win over Mills, and followed that with a 25-20, 25-14, 25-20 triumph over Pinewood in the semifinals. In the championship game, Menlo-Atherton fell to PAL Bay Division rival Aragon, 25-16, 25-15, 25-16.

Pinewood (1-2) fell in the third-place match to Burlingame, 25-14, 25-15, 19-25, 25-17.

Lori Maumasi and Laya Engelhardt made the all-tournament team from Menlo-Atherton while Sami Andreacchi of Pinewood also made the squad.

Girls water polo

The annual Peninsula Challenge will return this weekend when Castilleja plays host to a handful of local teams to open the season.

Football

Menlo and Sacred Heart Prep will get a jump on the local scene with games Saturday. The Knights will visit San Mateo while the Gators will host El Camino, both at 2 p.m.
