SOLAR SAVVY . . . The Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club will present a free solar electricity information and payback class, plus a solar home tour on Sunday, Aug. 21, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Los Altos Library community room, 13 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos. Speakers include Andy Black, a solar electric financial specialist who can address return on investment, and solar advocate Kurt Newick, who will discuss installation and upkeep, selecting a contractor and environmental benefits. JUST FOR WOMEN . . . Carla Rayacich, CEO of Stanford Mortgage, will offer her "Homebuying for Women Seminar" on three Thursdays, from 7 to 9 p.m., beginning Aug. 25, at Canada College, 4200 Farm Hill Blvd., Redwood City. TREE STEWARDSHIP . . .Canopy: Trees for Palo Alto is offering a series of five free workshops on the care and maintenance of community trees. The series kicks off Saturday, Aug. 27, 9 to 10:30 a.m. with "Understanding the Miracle of Community Trees," with City of Palo Alto Arborist Dave Dockter and Jana Dilley, Canopy program director. Space is limited to 25. Future workshops include: Sept. 24, 9 a.m.-11 a.m., Improving the Health and Longevity of Your Mature Tree, with arborist John McClenahan; Nov. 5, 9 a.m.-noon, Selecting and Planting Young Trees, with arborist Kevin Raftery and landscape designer Connie Lefkowits; Feb. 18, 9 a.m.-noon, Training Young Trees for Structure and Form, with arborist Kevin Raftery; and April 22, 9 a.m.-noon, Pruning and Managing Fruit Trees, with arborist Dave Muffly.
